Hello! What’s your background and what services you or your agency provide?
Hi! My name is Ashley and I’m the Founder of ADB Publicity. I have worked exclusively in the public relations industry for over a decade, and my intense passion for entertainment has propelled me to work on a multitude of accounts in the arts and entertainment industries.
My firm is a boutique style firm that provides a range of client services vital to the entertainment sector, including, strategic media relations, media training and support, media monitoring and analytics, creative photo shoot logistics and organization, red carpet coordination and navigation, social media management, and brand sponsorship.
What motivated you to working in the PR profession? What’s your typical work week like?
I’ve always had a love for a story. I actually went to College for Radio and Television Broadcasting with a specialty in TV reporting, and through that I actually found a deep love for media relations and for the way PR professionals told stories. The art of storytelling is important as it connects us to each other and stimulates feelings and ideas, and I enjoy being a bridge to bring stories of creative people to the world.
My typical work week varies from client to client but it’s always busy. You can find me consistently flipping through the trades and on social media checking out the entertainment landscape, preparing proposals, pitching my clients to numerous media outlets, connecting interview calls, reviewing email interviews, liaising with networks and film studios on behalf of my clients, confirming client attendance at events, conducting media training, and sometimes walking my clients through red carpets. There’s never a dull day, and it’s an absolute dream come true.
How have you attracted new clients and grown your business?
A lot of my new client base comes to me through word of mouth. The last 4 clients I signed actually all came to me through clients I already had on my roster. I also attend many industry events to network. Networking is really important in any industry but especially in PR. It helps to develop and improve your skill set, stay on top of the latest trends in the industry, and meet prospective mentors, partners, and clients.
What are some of the big challenges for PR in the entertainment sector?
I can’t really speak for the industry as a whole, but what I’m personally finding is that with so much content being put out into the market and numerous talent out there needing and wanting publicity, it can be tough to get a client prioritized or even chosen for an interview. But that’s the nature of the job, and I’m here to make sure my clients get coverage.
What are your favorite PR tools that you cannot live without?
A good old fashioned notebook as I’m quite old school when it comes to taking notes and creating task lists, Adobe Acrobat for the creation of press kits, G-Suite including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Calendar for my day to day, Social Media applications Instagram and Twitter, IMDb Pro and of course my smartphone.
What are some of the best things about living or doing PR in Vancouver, B.C.?
I love that I live in a place with the moniker Hollywood North, as the city is constantly surrounded by film and television productions, which is not only great for the city but great for my business as well. Being surrounded by the mountains and ocean doesn’t hurt either.
What’s a client story that you’re most proud of?
I’m proud of all my clients. They all amaze me with their work ethic and passion for their craft. To be honest I can’t pick just one.
Just some of the coverage we earned for our client: Allison Giroday; Occhi Magazine Elysia Rotaru; Good Morning Lalaland Elysia Rotaru; Terroir Magazine Fiona Vroom; Hallmarkies Podcast Kate Green; Hollywood North Magazine Madison Smith; Below the Belt Show Madison Smith; Trunkspace Marcus Rosner; Hallmark Home and Family Parveen Dosanjh; Tell Tale TV
What’s your advice for PR pros who are just starting out or entrepreneurs doing PR on their own?
Have passion for PR and for the sector of the industry you choose. Feel secure and confident. Without that it can be quite daunting to perform at such a high level day after day.
